SPECIAL CONTAINMENT PROCEDURES
All known remains of SCP-XXXX are to be preserved and stored within Site-74's archival wing.
SCP-XXXX-α is to be held in a 40,000-liter amphibious containment unit in the Wildlife Containment wing of Site-225. Carrion is to be deposited into its unit twice daily. SCP-XXXX-α is to be continuously monitored by at least 4 armed guards.
Foundation agents in Mexico City's ecological restoration projects are to track any reports of drownings, canine vocalizations, or sightings resembling SCP-XXXX.
DESCRIPTION
SCP-XXXX refers to a species of semi-aquatic canids (Atelocynus amphibios) previously native to Lake Texcoco. Typical specimens of SCP-XXXX measure 60cm in height and 212cm in length, nearly half of which is composed of an prehensile, muscular tail ending in a keratinized, hand-like structure. SCP-XXXX possess pronounced webbing on its paws and dense coat of oily black fur. Records indicate that, while under distress, SCP-XXXX was also capable of mimicking the crying of an infant.
Despite indigenous and colonial records indicating that SCP-XXXX preyed on humans, evidence suggests that SCP-XXXX primarily scavenged for its food, relying on drowned animals and discarded carcasses for sustenance.
Following the draining of Lake Texcoco and hunting efforts by GoI-1025 ("Buscadores de Dios en Nueva España"), SCP-XXXX was believed to be extinct. This was until the discovery of SCP-XXXX-α. SCP-XXXX-α was discovered buried underground during a Metro tunneling survey. It is believed SCP-XXXX-α was in an advanced state of aestivation, burying itself in a mucus cocoon similar to some species of frog or lungfish.
SCP-XXXX-α is the only known living instance of SCP-XXXX. Despite this, SCP-XXXX-α displays multiple differences from other members of its species. SCP-XXXX-α is notably larger (measuring 153cm in height and 465cm in length), significantly more aggressive, and demonstrates elevated cognitive abilities. This includes simple problem-solving and crude attempts at human speech. In the few interviews with SCP-XXXX-α, it has produced disjointed words and phrases composed of heavily distorted English, Spanish, and Nahuatl.

Dr. Katherine Summers: SCP-XXXX-α, can you understand me?
[SCP-XXXX-α stops moving. Its head lifts slightly above the waterline.]
SCP-XXXX-α [strained] …palabra… tlatolli… speak?
Dr. Summers: Yes. I would like to ask some questions, if that's okay with you.
[SCP-XXXX-α bares its teeth, stretching its jaw as though recovering from disuse. It lets out a short, rasping bark.]
SCP-XXXX-α: Frío… Nisekmiki. Place… frío…
Dr. Summers: We can adjust the temperature of your enclosure if needed.
SCP-XXXX-α: No. Frío…[pause]… Where… ātl? Lake?
Dr. Summers: I'm sorry. Lake Texcoco no longer exists. You were found beneath the city that was built over it.
[SCP-XXXX-α submerges completely for several seconds. A low, bubbling rumble is audible, rhythmic and slow.]
SCP-XXXX-α: [muffled] Todos… gone. Yaqui.
Dr. Summers: [pause] …Do you remember others of your kind?
[SCP-XXXX-α resurfaces abruptly, striking the glass barrier with its tail. Dr. Summers stumbles back in shock.]
SCP-XXXX-α: You take. Siempre toman! Not you… amo te. You… no-hair… cachopin. Stone-throwers. Take ātl… take cencaltin…. Take chantli…
[SCP-XXXX-α retreats to the farthest side of the enclosure, partially submerged.]
Dr. Summers: SCP-XXXX-α, we want to understand what you've experienced. But we need to talk for that to happen.
[SCP-XXXX-α does not respond. Its breathing slows. Soft, clicking sounds are heard until Dr. Summers leaves.]

CONTAINMENT BREACH
SCP-XXXX Containment Breach Report
Date: 09/25/2021
A week after initial containment, Site-225 experienced a site-wide breach. Once alarms were activated, SCP-XXXX-α breached its primary enclosure by repeatedly slamming the glass barrier separating it from the observation deck. The barrier had not been properly reinforced, due to an underestimation of SCP-XXXX-α's physical capabilities.
11 minutes later, SCP-XXXX-α charged the door to the observation deck. The first two impacts produced no results. The third created a gap between the doors, allowing SCP-XXXX-α to further open it with its tail-hand.
Upon escaping, SCP-XXXX-α exhibited typical panic behavior. Its movements lacked directionality; security footage and reports from personnel show the instance slipping repeatedly on the tile flooring, colliding with wall junctions, and vocalizing in a manner described as "hoarse barking" interspersed with rapid clicking.
Twenty minutes later, security personnel were dispatched to recontain SCP-XXXX-α. SCP-XXXX-α managed to evade or incapitate these personnel. Despite them being injured, no indications of predatory behavior were observed. SCP-XXXX-α located an unsecured emergency exit leading to the outer grounds of Site-225. The instance then fled into the surrounding area.
Site drones located SCP-XXXX-α five hours later, partially submerged in a section of the White River approximately 8km from Site-225. The instance remained immobile until approached, at which point it emitted low growls but made no further attempts to escape. A recovery team was dispatched, which successfully tranquilized SCP-XXXX-α and transported it back.
No casualties were reported, but ten security personnel were treated for minor or major injuries. SCP-XXXX-α was kept in a temporary high-risk containment unit while repairs and upgrades were done on its enclosure.

"…the creature described by the Indians has been verified to exist in the Lake. Its coat is black as pitch, and it drags the dead from the shallows, which the natives mistake as an agent of their false gods. I have instructed the men not to fear it, for any beast that clings to perished flesh is merely an animal misled by the Devil's design.
Our patrol located three dens. Two were torched. Within the third we found what appeared to be an adult and a smaller one, perhaps offspring. The adult escaped into a deeper channel. The smaller did not."

Notes: The tail-limb is strong enough to grasp men and trip them. Blades are inefficient. Guns were sufficient. The Indian guides insist the animals are harmless. How can they think such a thing of such ugly beasts? Regardless, the Bishop's orders remain."

Dr. Katherine Summers: Hello again, SCP-XXXX-a. I wanted to try and talk with you again. I brought a friend along this time, her name is Hayk. Is that okay?
SCP-XXXX-a: Bien… bien… [clicking] matzanelli… matza— [short whine] frío.
Dr. Summers: Are you still cold?
SCP-XXXX-a: Cold… mi casa aquai?
Dr. Akabi Hayk: This… isn't your home persay, but we want to make it as comfortable as possible.
SCP-XXXX-a: Casa… lago… agua viejo… no… no…
Hayk: SCP-XXXX-a, can you tell us why you tried to run away?

Summers: Your mother? Do you remember her?
SCP-XXXX-a: Si… no… Hands… frío….
Summers: Did someone hurt her?

Hayk: It's losing coherence, ask something else. SCP-XXXX-a, where were you trying to run to?
SCP-XXXX-a: Casa?
Summers: The river? Do you think that's your home?

Hayk: You have plenty of water right here, though. Is it not the same?

Summers: When you saw the security personnel, why did you strike them?

Note: SCP-XXXX-a's speech and cognition are advanced for its species, but woefully stunted by our standards. Its speech is mostly made up of fragments from English, Spanish, and Nahuatl, with minimal attempt at structured syntax. This isn't to say SCP-XXXX-a is unintelligent. It recognizes names, attempts to respond meaningfully, and demonstrates clear intent to communicate. I believe it is capable of more advanced speech, if given the proper tools.
