The Life and Times of Hairon Victor Valerio de la Cruz

You are currently viewing the audio transcript for Engineer Victor Valerio's exit interview. Exit interviews are conducted on the last day of an individual's employment at the Foundation. They are intended to recover an individual's account of their life prior to and during their tenure at the Foundation. They are conducted, with minimal interface and guidance from, the individual's on-site parapsychologist.

Engineer Valerio's exit interview was recorded on July 10th, 2048 by Dr. Akabi Hayk.

Starting now. You ready?

…Yeah, I'm ready.

My name is Hairon Victor Valerio de la Cruz. I was bo—

Yes, Hairon. When you first hired me, the guy only put Victor Valerio down. I never bothered fixing it.

July 9th, 1979. I was born in Cerro Punta, Panama. My mom says I was a quiet little thing, but my dad said all I did was whine and cry. I'll let you decide who was right.

My first actual memory was when I was three. I had a younger brother and sister, with another sister on the way. I wasn't the oldest, but I wouldn't find that out until years later. They had another son years before me, but he had died before he was 5 months old. They never told me his name, but I found a photo of him with his name on the back. 'Victor.' [chuckle]

We grew up on a farm near the border with Costa Rica, up there in the mountains. Most of my childhood memories from then are of me working on the farm. If I wasn't working on the farm, I was at school. And if I wasn't at either of those, I was sleeping. I remember hating my father for putting me to work, but I can appreciate it now. I don't think we had the money for farmhands, anyways.

What did you grow?

Oh, coffee beans. I haven't been to the farm in decades, but I can still smell the flowers. A sweet smell.

As my brother got older, he helped on the farm more. My sister wanted to help too, but my mother never let her. But my brother working gave me some free time, time I used to discover my passion: tinkering.

We didn't live in a village. Well, we did, but we didn't live very close to anyone. So school was the only place I really saw anyone that wasn't family. I was really, really shy back then. Did I mention I had a speech impediment? Terrible stutter. Mm, they use to call me 'AK-47' because [chuckle] one time, a group of people came to my home and I answered the door. They asked for my father, so I turned around and went 'Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa.' I just couldn't get the word out. They mocked me for it for years…

Sorry, school. I was very shy, so I didn't talk to many people. But school was great for my hobby. People would throw away old toys they didn't want, or bicycles that got bent, and I would take them back home and break them down into parts. It was great. I had a good stash of parts.

[11, meeting manuel noriega]

[fleeing panama later same year]

[adjusting to CR, still living close to panama border on a new farm. disappointed he had to leave his tinkering behind]

[memories in CR]

[move to san jose age 16 for school, got caught up in crime]

[losing siblings to crime, admittance of using PANOPTICON to try and find them. no trace of them]

[flee to USA age 20 to run from crime, immediately run into crime there. flew to atlanta, GA and first thing off the plane is seeing someone get robbed. struggle to get out of airport cause of language barrier, takes a bus to charleston. believed that USA was all concrete, no nature, because he was always told that tourists came to costa rica because they had no nature back home. slightly disappointed by the fields he sees on busride to charleston] Sep 26th, 1999

[gets job in construction, continues tinkering]

[9/11. was on first date with his future wife when they saw the news on the TV]

[recruitment by Foundation 2007, run-in with an escaped anomaly. uses tinkering/engineering expertise to mitigate its effects. Foundation impressed, hires him. he joins AWD]

[2018-2021. COVID, discovers he is a SCP-6821-H instance via infection of SCP-6821-V. leaves foundation briefly to recover/recieve care.]

[reason as to why he never went back to CR/panama: he was scared that either he or the country changed too much since he was last there in 1999, and it wouldn't be the same. wanted to perserve the memory he had in his head]
