Our Little Barker

ITEM:SCP-XXXX LEVEL3/XXXX
CLASS:Ticonderoga confidential

DISRUPTION CLASS: keneq

SPECIAL CONTAINMENT PROCEDURES

Manned voyages into space are to be carefully observed for SCP-XXXX's presence. Civilian vessels are not to be informed of the existence of SCP-XXXX..Ticonderoga-class items cannot be contained but do not need to be contained.

DESCRIPTION

SCP-XXXX is a phenomenon affecting all intrasolar manned voyages. To date, not a single manned voyage leaving Earth's orbit has failed. Even in cases where parts of the ship suffered catastrophic malfunctions or projections predicted failure, all most manned voyages have successfully arrived at their destination with zero casualties.

So far, no indicator of a source of SCP-XXXX has been discovered. No notable fluctuations in Humes or Akiva radiation have been detected. Likewise, essophysical energies show no deviations from the normal ambience.

ADDENDUM.XXXX.1

DISCOVERY

The effects of SCP-XXXX were first noted by Dr. Markova Yazdovsky in 2043 and later theorized and compiled into an SCP file by her granddaughter, Dr. Vitsina Yazdovsky.

Since SCP-XXXX's classification, Dr. Yazdovsky has spearheaded investigation and research into SCP-XXXX. Specifically, Dr. Yazdovsky has been working to uncover the source of SCP-XXXX. To this extent, several experiments have been conducted to test the limitations of SCP-XXXX.

EXPERIMENTS

SCP-XXXX Experiment Log

Experiment Log.XXXX.01

Intent: Pilot SCPS Draugr.A Sparrow-class vessel used by Task Forces for time-sensitive operations. towards a collision with an asteroid.

Reaction: A previously undocumented asteroid collided with the target asteroid, diverting it from SCPS Draugr's course.

Outcome: SCPS Draugr suffered no casualties.

Experiment.XXXX.11 Log

Intent: SCPS Draugr and SCPS Ymir.An Heron-Class vessel used by the Foundation as a mobile Containment Site. Decommissioned following the development of Roc and Ziz-Class vessels. collide with each other.

Reaction: SCPS Ymir was hit by a small asteroid, veering it off the collision course.

Intent: SCPS Draugr suffered no casualties. SCPS Ymir suffered minor damage to its shield generator but was otherwise unharmed.

Note: The second time an asteroid's been involved. Is something throwing them our way? - Dr. Y

Experiment.XXXX.12 Log

Intent: Repeat of Experiment.XXXX.11 except in an area without asteroids or similar bodies.

Reaction: SCPS Draugr's Captain Harker reported seeing a blinding white light, forcing the crew to activate the vessel's emergency brakes.

Outcome: Several members of SCPS Draugr's navigation reported hearing barking or yapping noises accompanying the light, although none of the recording devices onboard detected such a noise. SCPS Draugr's MAGEs detected a minor increase in ARad energy, corresponding with the light.

ADDENDUM.XXXX.4

EXPERIMENTS CONTINUED

Experiment.XXXX.24 Log

Intent: SCPS Ymir is to enter Jupiter without the proper preparations.

Reaction: SCPS Ymir successfully entered Jupiter, resulting in its destruction.

Outcome: SCPS Ymir and its crew were flagged as lost and unrecoverable. Rescue missions have failed to find any surviving personnel.

Note: At the same time as we were conducting the experiment, a leisure vessel was travelling through the Asteroid Belt. Maybe SCP-XXXX can only manifest in one place at a time? That would point towards there being a singular intelligence behind it. - Dr. Y

Experiment.XXXX.26 Log

Intent: Repeat of Experiment.XXXX.01, but with instruments searching for spectral entities.

Reaction: Similar reaction to Experiment.XXXX.01. Instruments detected the presence of a spectral entity or entities.

Outcome: The Department of the Departed conducted an inquiry on all individuals known to have died while in space. No individual reported any levels of activity required to be a potential source of SCP-XXXX.

Experiment.XXXX.27 Log

Intent: SCPS Draugr is to leave the Sol System and operate in intersolar space for 2 years before returning.

Reaction: SCPS Draugr experienced several incidents outside the Sol System that would've otherwise been prevented by SCP-XXXX.

Outcome: SCPS Draugr suffered minor damages to its hull as a result of asteroid collisions and lost one engineer during a spacewalk. SCPS Draugr suffered no other casualties or damages upon reentering the Sol System.

Experiment.XXXX.34 Log

Intent: SCPS Draugr is to travel through the Asteroid Belt while Dr. Vitsina Yazdovsky spacewalks outside. Dr. Yazdovsky is to disconnect from SCPS Draugr after a period of one minute.

Reaction: See Addendum.XXXX.5.

Outcome: See Addendum.XXXX.5.

EXPERIMENT.XXXX.34

Experiment.XXXX.34 Log

[BEGIN LOG]

[SCPS Draugr departs from the Sol IV station, aiming for the asteroid belt. Onboard, Dr. Vitsina Yazdovsky is preparing for the spacewalk with assistance from Captain M.K. Harker.]

Dr. Vitsina Yazdovsky: [groan] This suit's so big. Was there really not one my size?

[Captain Harker locks Dr. Yazdovsky's helmet into place.]

Captain M.K. Harker: I apologize, ma'am, but Igor's suit was the only one we had on hand. The rest are still undergoing repairs from your past experiment.

Dr. Yazdovksy: I'm still sorry about that.

[Captain Harker shakes his head, grabbing the umbilical cable and attaching it to Dr. Yazdovsky's spacesuit.]

Captain Harker: Nonsense. Did you control the asteroid that took Lucas? No. You have no need to apologize. Do you remember how to detach the cable and use the mobility unit?

[Dr. Yazdovsky nodded.]

Captain Harker: Perfect. We'll leave you in the airlock until it's time. See you later.

[Captain Harker pats Dr. Yazdovsky on the back and leaves, locking the airlock behind him. Dr. Yazdovsky turns to face the other door and sits down, waiting.]

[2 hours abridged.]

[Dr. Yazdovsky is pacing around the airlock, holding the umbilical cable in her arms so it doesn't tangle around her. The P.A. System in the airlock turns on, drawing her attention.]

Captain Harker [PA]: We're getting into a good spot in the belt, Vitsina. You ready?

Dr. Yazdovsky: Ready as I'll ever be.

Captain Harker [PA]: That's what I like to hear! Initiating the airlock doors now. I'll switch the log recording and comms to your suit once you're out there.

[Dr. Yazdovsky nods, dropping the cable and standing in front of the doors. The klaxons blare as the airlock slowly opens. Dr. Yazdovsky takes a deep breath before pushing herself off the floor, gently gliding out of the airlock.]

[The solar wind beats on her suit as she floats away from the SCPS Draugr. She does a full spin as she looks around her, noticing the asteroids gently moving away from her and the vessel. Her visor dims as she turns to look at Sol, protecting her eyes.]

Captain Harker [Comm]: Beautiful, no?

Dr. Yazdovsky: …Yeah. I see why people pay top bill for this now.

Captain Harker [Comm]: [laughter] If I could, I would just live out there, floating among the stars. Alas, I have rent to pay. We'll let you float out there for a bit, but let us know when you're ready to detach. Sooner the better.

[Dr. Yazdovsky nods absentmindly. After ten minutes, Dr. Yazdovsky grabs the cable.]

Dr. Yazdovsky: I'm ready.

Captain Harker [Comm]: Perfect. Go ahead and remove the cable.

[Dr. Yazdovsky removes the lock on the umbilical cable, pushing it out of its socket. It silently snakes back to the airlock, a mechanism inside coiling it back up.]

Captain Harker [Comm]: Smooth sailing, space cowboy.

[Dr. Yazdovsky groans and rolls her eyes as she engages her Mobile Propulsion Device (MPD). She jets away from the vessel, aiming for a dense cluster of asteroids.]

Captain Harker [Comm]: [static] You're leaving the range for the short-distance… [static]…gonna get hard to… [static] …safe… [static]/…you soon.

[Dr. Yazdovsky turns to give the SCPS Draugr a salute before continuing her spacewalk.]

Dr. Yazdovsky: On my own from here on out. Just me and whatever is causing SCP-XXXX.

[Dr. Yazdovsky approaches the cluster of asteroids. A smaller asteroid floats toward her before colliding with another asteroid, sending both away from her.]

Dr. Yazdovsky: We know whatever is causing this isn't religious, or ontokinetic, or thaumaturgic. Not essophysical either. Was really hoping I was dealing with a god of travel out here, that would've been cool.

[An asteroid passed by, narrowly avoiding colliding with Yazdovsky.]

Dr. Yazdovsky: But it's a spectral entity, a ghost. But we checked on every person we know who's died while in space, but none of them have been active enough to be pulling something like SCP-XXXX off. All too busy enjoying their afterlives to be watching out for us.

Dr. Yazdovsky: So, the question is, what cares about humanity enough to make sure we can get off our rock without dying?

[A large asteroid, twice the size of SCPS Ymir, hurtles towards Dr. Yazdovsky. Several smaller asteroids veer off course one after the other to collide with the larger one. None of them manage to impact it enough to change its trajectory. Dr. Yazdovsky holds her arms up and screams, bracing for impact.]

[A bright white light engulfs the video as Dr. Yazdovsky's screams become louder. A low growling noise can be heard before the feed is cut off.]

[Static.]

[Camera footage of SCPS Draugr's bridge. Captain Harker is bent over the vessel's radar, looking for signs of Dr. Yazdovsky.]

Captain Harker: How did she just vanish?! We had every instrument on this ship honed on her! You're telling me she just disappeared from all of them?!

[A Junior Engineer timidly approaches Captain Harker, holding a printout in her hands. Captain Harker swings his head up to face her and rips the papers from her, scanning them.]

Captain Harker: What is this?

Junior Engineer Emilia Everest: C-Captain Harker, it's printouts from the MAGEs, sir. There was a surge in ARad levels, lining up with when Dr. Yazdovsky disappeared. It lines up with fluctuations we see when multiple individuals apport.Apportation: A method by which thaumaturgists and thaumaturgic entities undergo quantum tunnelling to appear elsewhere., sir.

Captain Harker: So she's still out there. Send the readings to command, see if we can't figure out where they apported to.

[J.E Everest nods, gathering the papers and leaving. Captain Harker looks out the bridge's viewport to where Dr. Yazdovsky was and sighs.]

[END LOG]

Following Experiment.XXXX.34, members of the Foundation's Department of Thaumaturgy were tasked with finding the whereabouts of Dr. Yazdovsky. After a week-long investigation, the destination of her apportation was determined to be the decommissioned Baikonur Cosmodrome near Danhai, NuMongolia.Formerly Töretam, Kazakhstan.. During this period, there was a noted absence of SCP-XXXX's properties, with several Foundation, GOC, and Civilian vessels reporting major damages and losses. A special task force, led by Captain M.K. Harker, was sent to the facility.

Operation Log

[BEGIN LOG]

[A group of four operatives arrive at the ruins of the cosmodrome. Once the main launching point for Russian space missions, it has since fallen to disrepair. Captain M.K. Harker leads the task force as they hop out of the carrier into the desert. They all carry personal firearms along with ectospectrums for detecting spectral entities. Harker holds his up, pointing it towards the facility.]

Captain M.K. Harker: Instruments are picking up a spectral entity inside the facility. Move out.

[The operatives follow Harker's lead and follow him into the cosmodrome, carefully stepping around debris and broken glass. They hold up their ectospectrums, following them towards the spectral entity. One operative stops at the entrance to the living quarters, holding up his ectospectrum.]

Operative Beta: Harker, sir, I'm picking up a trail here!

Captain Harker: Follow it then.

[Operative Beta nods and goes down the hallway, the rest of the task force following behind him. Unlike the rest of the facility, the living quarters show no signs of abandonment or disuse. Several lights are still on and the refrigerator can be heard running as they walk past the kitchen, despite the cosmodrome having no power. Harker signals for the task force to remain quiet. He dispatches Operative Delta to investigate the kitchen as the rest continue further.]

[The task force comes across an open room and files into it. Inside, they find an unmade bed and dirty clothes littering the floor. Operative Gamma lifts up a coat from the floor, revealing a dog bed underneath. Harker opens the closet, finding the spacesuit Dr. Yazdovsky was using hung up.]

Captain Harker: She's here, I know it.

[The operatives leave the room and continue, heading towards the arboretum. They find the door to it locked. The operatives take turns trying to pull it open before Operative Beta takes his firearm out and shoots the handle, creaking it open. Captain Harker scolds Beta for the noise before going through the door and the airlock. As they open the door to the other side, they hear laughter. Captain Harker signals for the task force to remain quiet as he continues forward. He sneaks into the shrubbery, heading towards where the laughs came from. He trudges through the bushes, eventually coming to a clearing.]

Unknown Voice [Russian]: [laughter] Quit it! You're ruining my shirt!

[Barking]

[Captain Harker perks up at the barking, rushing into the clearing. There, he finds Dr. Yazdovsky sitting in the grass, her hair messy and her pajamas covered in dirt. Running around her, barking loudly, is a translucent dog. The dog stops when it spots Captain Harker and stands between him and Dr. Yazdovsky. The doctor groaned and got up.]

Dr. Vitsina Yazdovsky [Russian]: Down, girl! He is a friend!

[The dog stops and looks at Captain Harker. After a moment's pause, it starts wagging its tail and bounds over to Harker, jumping up and licking his hands. In shock, Harker slowly pulls out his ectospectrum, pointing it at the dog. The device beeps loudly, indicating the dog is a spectral entity.]

Captain Harker: Is this..?

Dr. Yazdovsky: SCP-XXXX. Or at least who's causing it.

[Harker crouches and scratches behind the dog's ear. It wags its tail faster and licks Harker's face. Harker spits and wipes off the slobber from his face, causing Yazdovsky to break out in laughter.]

Captain Harker: Why haven't you reported back to the Foundation? We've been looking everywhere for you for the past week.

Dr. Yazdovsky: I don't know if you've seen the state of this place, but I've had some difficulty trying to send a signal out to anyone. Plus, my new friend here needed someone to look after her.

[Yazdovsky joins Harker and the dog on the ground. She grabs the dog and turns it around, showing multiple scars and injuries throughout its body.]

Dr. Yazdovsky: She's been looking over us for so long. She hasn't had a break since mankind's left Earth for the other planets, and I thought I'd give her one. She's about ready to head back out now, though.

[Behind Harker, the rest of the task force emerges from the greenery. Operative Delta holds up a half-empty bag of dog food. Harker looks back at them and nods before looking back at Yazdovsky.]

Captain Harker: What's her name?

[Yazdovsky smiles.]

Dr. Yazdovsky: Laika.
